"We are very anxious to use a different variety, DP 1212 B2RF, next year and deliver the first bale with it"

HARLINGEN, TX (September 10, 2013) – For the second consecutive year, Rodriguez Brothers Farm has successfully produced the nation’s first bale of cotton with DP 0920 B2RF, a Deltapine variety that was planted on February 2 and harvested on June 17.

“DP 0920 B2RF germinates quickly with a lot of good vigor. We are very satisfied with the yields it produces in our hot, dry conditions,” said George Rodriguez, Sr.

The Rodriguezes have used Deltapine cotton to win the first bale contest five out of the past eleven years. Their first win was in 2002. Rodriguez said he plans to continue the success of delivering the nation’s first bale of cotton in 2014.

“We are very anxious to use a different variety, DP 1212 B2RF, next year and deliver the first bale with it,” said Rodriguez.

Deltapine cotton varieties for South Texas are bred to make efficient use of available moisture, said Danny Gonzalez, district sales manager for Monsanto servicing Rodriguez Brothers Farm.

“George and his family are good farmers and good people in this community,” said Gonzalez. “The variety they grew the first bale with has been a solid performer in this region, but the newer class of Deltapine varieties bred for performance in limited water and dryland conditions such as DP 1212 B2RF offer even better yield and quality potential while maintaining the early maturity desired by our farmers.”

Every year, the first bale is auctioned off and the proceeds go to support the First Bale Auction and Scholarship Fund Raiser put on by the Harlingen Cotton Committee and the Algodon Club of Harlingen. The winning bid for this year’s first bale was $3,700.
